5G
Fifth-generation mobile network offering peak download speeds of 10+ Gbps and latency under 1ms. Sub-6 GHz 5G provides wider coverage; mmWave delivers extreme speeds in limited areas.

AMOLED
Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode. A display technology with deep blacks, vibrant colors, and low power consumption since each pixel emits its own light. Used in most modern flagship phones.
B
Bluetooth
Short-range wireless technology for connecting devices. Bluetooth 5.x offers longer range, faster speeds, and better coexistence with Wi-Fi. Common in earbuds, speakers, and smartwatches.
C
CPU
Central Processing Unit — the primary processor handling app logic, calculations, and system tasks. Phone CPUs are multi-core (4-8 cores) and integrated into an SoC chip.
D
Dimensity
MediaTek's line of 5G SoCs for smartphones. Dimensity 9000+ series targets flagship performance, competing with Snapdragon 8 Gen series. Known for integrated 5G modems.
Dual SIM
A phone with two SIM card slots, allowing use of two phone numbers or carriers simultaneously. Variants include physical Dual SIM, SIM + eSIM, and Dual eSIM.

eSIM
Embedded SIM — a programmable SIM built into the device. Allows switching carriers without a physical SIM card. Supported by most modern flagship phones.
Exynos
Samsung's proprietary line of SoCs. Used in Samsung phones sold in certain regions (Europe, parts of Asia) while Snapdragon variants are sold in others (USA, Korea).

Fast Charging
Technologies like Qualcomm Quick Charge, USB Power Delivery, or proprietary (VOOC, SuperDart, HyperCharge) that significantly reduce charging time by increasing wattage.

GPU
Graphics Processing Unit — handles rendering graphics, games, and visual effects. Integrated into the SoC (e.g., Adreno in Snapdragon, Immortalis in Dimensity).
H
HDR
High Dynamic Range. Displays content with greater contrast between the brightest and darkest areas. HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision are common standards on phone displays.
I
IPS
In-Plane Switching LCD panel offering accurate colors and wide viewing angles. More power-efficient than AMOLED in some scenarios but lacks true blacks and can't turn off individual pixels.
IP Rating
Ingress Protection rating (e.g., IP68) measuring dust and water resistance. IP68 means protected against dust (6) and can be submerged in 1.5m of water for 30 minutes (8).
L
LCD
Liquid Crystal Display. Uses a backlight behind liquid crystal pixels. Variants include TFT, IPS, and PLS. Being replaced by OLED/AMOLED in most flagships due to OLED's superior contrast.
LTE
Long Term Evolution — the 4G mobile network standard. Offers download speeds of 100–1000 Mbps in ideal conditions. All modern smartphones support LTE.

NFC
Near Field Communication. Short-range wireless at 13.56 MHz, used for contactless payments (Google Pay, Apple Pay), file transfer, and pairing accessories.
O
OLED
Organic Light-Emitting Diode. Each pixel generates its own light, enabling true blacks, infinite contrast ratio, and power savings when displaying dark content.
OIS
Optical Image Stabilization. Uses a floating lens element or sensor to physically compensate for camera shake during photo and video capture, reducing blur.
P
PDAF
Phase Detection Autofocus. Uses pairs of pixels to detect phase differences and calculate the direction and speed of focus adjustment, enabling fast and accurate AF.
R
RAM
Random Access Memory. Temporary storage used for running apps and multitasking. More RAM (8GB–16GB on flagships) allows more apps to stay open simultaneously without reloading.
Refresh Rate
How many times per second the screen redraws itself, measured in Hz. Higher rates (90/120/144Hz) provide smoother scrolling and animations. LTPO displays vary rate dynamically.
ROM
Read-Only Memory, colloquially used to mean internal storage (eMMC or UFS). Where your apps, photos, and data are stored. Typically 128GB–1TB in modern phones.

SAR
Specific Absorption Rate — measures radiation absorbed by the body from a phone. Regulated at 1.6 W/kg (USA) or 2.0 W/kg (Europe) as safety limits.
Snapdragon
Qualcomm's line of mobile SoCs. The flagship 8 Gen series powers most Android premium phones. Integrates CPU, GPU, DSP, modem, and AI accelerator on a single chip.
SoC
System on a Chip — integrates CPU, GPU, modem, NPU, ISP, and other components onto a single semiconductor package. Examples: Apple A18 Pro, Snapdragon 8 Elite, Dimensity 9400.
T
ToF
Time of Flight sensor. Measures depth by calculating the time it takes for infrared light to bounce back from objects. Used for 3D face unlock and improved portrait mode.
U
USB-C
Universal Serial Bus Type-C connector. Reversible plug supporting charging (up to 240W with USB PD), data transfer (USB 3.x, Thunderbolt 4), and video output (DisplayPort).
W
Wi-Fi 6E
Wi-Fi standard (802.11ax) extended to the 6 GHz band. Offers lower latency, higher throughput, and less congestion in dense environments compared to 5 GHz Wi-Fi 6.
Wireless Charging
Inductive charging via Qi standard (most common), MagSafe (Apple), or proprietary protocols. Speeds range from 5W (basic Qi) to 50W+ (Xiaomi, OnePlus).
